Residents impacted by SNAP freeze can visit UP center for food vouchers
United Against Poverty of Indian River County is stepping up to support local families affected by the nationwide freeze on SNAP benefits. Through its Member Share Grocery Program, the nonprofit is offering food vouchers valued at 30% of a participant’s normal SNAP benefits to those whose assistance has been halted. The initiative, called the SNAP Support Initiative, is available to SNAP recipients during the week they would usually receive their benefits, helping them purchase essential groceries like bread and eggs. This effort is being carried out in partnership with regional organizations including the Mental Health Collaborative, Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council, and the Senior Resource Association.
Since the freeze began on November 1, United Against Poverty has already aided 50 families with a total of 692 vouchers, providing a crucial lifeline for those struggling to make ends meet. The organization emphasizes that SNAP recipients are often seniors, veterans, and hardworking parents—neighbors who are key members of the community. With 50% of Indian River County residents facing challenges affording basic necessities, this support offers a chance for families to redirect funds to other critical needs. The Member Share Grocery Program, open seven days a week, continues to help hundreds save up to 70% on groceries, offering hope and stability during the government funding shutdown.
